I have the express impress touch and use the portafilter that came with it, not bottomless. Is this a upgrade to use with a bottomless version?

Correct, you would need a bottomless portability to get full use out of this. This is a higher flow basket allowing you grind even finer. If you're using the built in grinder on the impress i'd say you don't need this.

A bottomless portafilter can also spray everywhere if your bed of grounds isn't pristine and uniform.

I have this for my Bambino Plus which I use alongside a bambino plus. I do appreciate the deeper basket though.

Could not get the extraction pressure in the espresso range no matter what.
For lower pressure brews moka pots are the better buy if you're interested in this kind of thing. However, if you actually want espresso, avoid this and either stick with the stock basket, or do more research and get a better one; this ain't it.
I mean, sure, it is only $15 if you want to try it. But caveat emptor.
IMS is a reputable brand. what grinder are you using? you should always be able to get fine enough to choke whatever machine you're using with your grind settings, that's how you know you've gone too fine.

I'd buy a spare if the 58 was on sale.

What's your grinder and grind size? I have several IMS baskets and they are definitely good baskets. Using this on a modified silvia and rocky, pressures are around 9.5bar and I put 24g in and get 48g out in about 28s on a bottomless ims triple

On Breville Barista Portafilter I was able to unclip and remove the black plastic bit in the bottom to make it fit.

You either got a defective basket, which is really obvious most of the time, or there was something else. Those are decent filters, from one of the most well known brands.

I've been using the Barista Express with the stock portafilter and basket with (I think) good results. Is there any reason to get this over the stock basket?

I have the Touch Impress and it seems even after almost a year, there is still so much new things and possibilities to learn. Had no clue there was such thing as a high-flow basket. This would probably not work well with the automatic functions of the Touch Impress and I would have to go into manual mode. Definitely not the level of skill I am at yet. This is probably the most informative comment section of a front page deal in a long time.

Question: what do you use to remove the filter baskets? I have just been using any random spoon. Is there a specific tool I should get?

I have a Breville BES840XL and IMS baskets work just fine with the stock portafilter if you remove the plastic insert inside. You can unscrew the diverter so it's easier to see the stream. Watching your extraction with a bottomless portafilter is fun and satisfying, but unless you use a small mirror or squat under your machine to watch, it's not really necessary.

IMS makes top quality baskets. I've been using a 58 on a Binaca v2 and have been happy with it. I find it a bit odd reading someone complaining about quality and recommending a stock basket, especially from Breville. Not to be a jerk about it, but IMS is well known and liked by the part of the market that wouldn't consider a Breville machine decent. The complaints feel like putting high end tires on a low end car and then blaming the tires.

With a basket like this, you'd be using it with a bottomless style portafilter so the basket bottom would be entirely exposed and you could simply push from the bottom directly. For others, Lodge, the cast iron pan people, make a nylon pan scraper that works great for extracting baskets. I didn't buy it for that purpose but it was on the counter one day and worked better than a butter knife. Has the added benefit of not damaging chrome during a slip of the hand.

You're aiming for those numbers?! I'm usually looking for more like 20g in, 30g out in 35 seconds at 9.5bar.
