TL;DR: You are paying a premium for genuine quality, ease of install and use, minimal delays when using with Siri/Alexa/Google assistant.

Learn from my architectural mistake of wanting to go hubless when I got started.
I didn't want to have a mass of hubs connected to my router and I mistakenly thought that going purely WiFi would be better.

It's. Not.

Roughly 20 Wemo devices and 12 Lifx bulbs later I understand why I should've just saved up my money and grabbed Lutron devices when they came down to this price (I still haven't converted yet).

I'm one of the few lucky ones that don't have too many MAJOR issues with my Wemo switches, dimmers and smart plugs but they are notoriously flaky to many and, I work in IT so my tolerance and understanding is different. I went LIFX smart bulb wise becase they were (and still are?) the best when it came to color accuracy. LIFX is now owned by Feit so...take that however you want.

The biggest lessons I've learned regarding smart lighting is:

1. It's better to have a smart switch/outlet than a smart bulb if you don't care about millions of colors and
2. Hubless isn't as great as promised. Even now that Apple have made Homepods and AppleTVs auto-magic hubs, the response times can still be slow and flaky. Also, as already mentioned, these don't require an internet connection and communicate on their own wireless protocol. So, the more devices you get, the less you have to worry about your wifi traffic being affected.

3. Lutron does one thing: Lighting. So, their products are rock solid and they are built with decades of purist lighting experience in mind.

Hope that helps. All the best!
No Neutral and super reliable are the biggest selling points. I have these on my stairway/upstair hallway lights. After setup a few years ago I've never had any issue where they didn't work, got disconnected from the app, etc.

I just recently moved into a house and know nothing about light switches, but I understand the tech aspect. so my kitchen has a light switch plate with two separate switches. Both switches turn on and off and have a physical dimmer. Would I need two of these just for the kitchen? Also, what are some good cheap light bulbs, or maybe I should read their manual of supported light bulbs. My new construction home gave some low lumens light bulbs in the rooms.

**Nvm I thought the second light bulb button could work for another set of lights lol.

Thank you very much, this is super helpful

I rent so there's only so much I can do about this, but I could use (1) smart bulbs, and (2) most importantly smart plugs (my wife has lots of led lights for growing plants that could use some automation). Do you have a brand / ecosystem / type / protocol that you'd recommend? I'm totally new here.

Newbie DIY homeowner question.... if a set of lights are controlled with 4 different switches (it's a long hallway), can I get away with 1 dimmer on one of the switches? If so, which one? Is there a "master"?
Thanks!

You'll definitely need to look at how your house is set up, but most likely you will need to leave all switches in the "on" position all the time to keep the circuit complete. Then use the lutron to control it. Potentially you can use two pico remotes and place them where the other switches are and use those rather than the physical switches.

Lutron actually has some smart plugs and dimmers.

I would go with Hue for bulbs. Very pricey, but well made and nearly as responsive as Lutron. They also use a hub so they don't clog your WiFi network

This post has made glad I've avoided wifi devices. A few are okay. I have a pretty good mix. I use Lutron for fans - I wanted a distinct button from normal lights - and I just never think about it.

Yeah their fan switches are really just about the only option out there - I have them on all the fans in our 4 bedrooms along with Caseta dimmer switches to control the light kits on the fans, in double gang switch boxes at the interior doorway of each bedroom. I have Pico remotes on pedestals for each fan and light kit on the bedside tables in each of those rooms, so they can be controlled without getting out of bed. They can be voice controlled using Echo Dot Clocks in each of the rooms too, but nice to be able to use the bedside Pico remotes to avoid waking up the entire family with voice commands at 2 AM to turn the fan on or off Smilie

They also do smart window shades and are the best in the market for them.
I will agree Serena Shades are the best.

But MAN do you pay for them - especially compared to something like Select Blinds.

I went through and priced out my home (≈27 windows) and at an average price of around $600 per shade (some more, some less), that's over $16k for my home. Even if I just used the ones I really wanted automated, and put their non-motorized ones elsewhere, I'd still be looking at ≈$10k. Plus, they don't offer solar charging, so that means changing batteries, having an electric cord to each window, or having an electrician run power to each window.

That's... a lot for me. Even during their 20% off sales.

IMO it all comes down to preference for the form factor - Divas are the newer more traditional style "Decora" paddle - if I was just getting in to Lutron's products, personally I'd stick with the Divas just for the form factor and better ergonomics (IMO). I have a number of old style Casetas and can't justify the expense of swapping them out for Divas, but again if just starting out I'd go with Divas.
Since I'm just getting into this project, I'll probably start with the Diva line. Is there an equivalent kit of this deal for the Diva line? I'm sure they won't be discounted for a while, but I got time (demo starting Monday). Thanks again!

Home Desperate just had a nice deal on a starter pack of 3 Divas, a hub, and a Pico remote, Unfortunately it's expired, but you might want to set a deal alert to track if it comes back,

I already have the hub. Can an extra hub do anything? I'm guessing buying 2 switches alone would come out to more money so the hub is essentially free, but worthless to me.

There's a good discount on the Lutron lamp dimmers now:
https://slickdeals.net/f/17390211-lutron-caseta-smart-lighting-lamp-dimmer-31?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

That deal doesn't come with a hub so it's not 'SMART' until you do (I don't think) but you can use the Pico remote with it. Here's a setup video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nlv1OWSGF4g\

I'm farily certain you can get one on Ebay or, even in this thread there's a SlickDealer who has 3 of em now because they couldn't resist too many Slickdeals. LOL. They might sell one to ya cheap. Smilie

Sooo...you could get a few of those for now and then, when a hub or a deal with one that comes up, you can grab that and the add the automations.

Smart bulb wise if you are in an apartment then you probably won't have many lights to install so the 2.4ghz flooding might not be a big deal to you. I'm still a Lifx fan for color accuracy but there are lots of options out there. Can't really be of help there as I'm not a Philips Hue fan personally and there have been lots of new entrants into the smart bulb arena. Plenty of great YouTubers out there like Smart Home Solver and Paul Hibbert.

Take your time and enjoy the journey!

I thought it was Home Despot, but Home Desperate works, too.

It's Home Desperate when I'm rushing there for a piece/part needed to finish a project, and Home Despot when I get their and see how much they are charging for the piece/part bounce

Perfect example of why you buy Lutron, my internet is currently down, my Kasa stuff can't be controlled at all right now so what is on is on and what is off is off, my Lutron on the other hand, no problems, especially with my Pico remotes.

To add onto this, I Installed these and some Kasa switches in our last house (about 5.5 years back). After we sold that place and moved into a new house, I just went with Caseta. Never had an issue with it, but always had an issue with Kasa going offline or being a pain in the setting up the Kasa (each unit would fail at least once).

Since the primary reason I got smart switches was mostly for laziness (and partially for security reasons while not home), you want it to work. Which is why spent more with Caseta. Someone who wants a smart switch for the novelty could get away with a cheaper device. Pico is also nice if your homebuilder only wired one switch for lights in a bigger room, just plop it wherever you feel like having a physical switch.
