Wonderboy! Won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck?
I absolutely loved this game on my Sega Master System as a kid. I definitely recommend picking this up but I realize I have so much nostalgia for this game that others won't have.

Can't recommend this enough. The new art/animation style is absolutely beautiful, and all the music has been re-recorded with real instruments. Yet the gameplay/controls remain intact and true to the original. (You can toggle back to old school graphics and/or sound and/or music in real time if you want.) I loved this game as a kid, so I've enjoyed reliving in this beautiful new form, and my kids love it too. 100% recommended even at the full price; it's a steal at the sale price.
this is a really fun game if you can get into simplistic games from times of yore. it's basically a re-skinned version of the original game. i never played the original on the master system so i can't say how close the 'feel' and mechanics are, but this is one of those modern updates where you can switch to the OG graphics and music, and see what you're "really" playing. and for me, i love being able to do that. i have to say that the modern art looks GREAT though. in my opinion it looks even better than the newer Monster Boy game's art, which went for a similar look. i even think this is the better game of the two, even if this one is more primitive. the newer one is good but has some major flaws for me that kind of ruined the experience. this one doesn't. it's just good.
How tough is this game? I have a 7 year old who does not like games too tough, and gets easily frustrated with exacting jumps and strong bosses…
I would say its quite tough...the bosses in particular can be difficult. I would not recommend this game to someone that young of age. This game is more for like 16+ imo

Wonder Boy in MonsterLand was one of my favorite games on SMS. Check out Wonder Boy and the Cursed Kingdom on PS+. That game is awesome.
If you enjoy this game, do yourself a favor and buy Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom once it's on a sale.
I really loved Monster Boy.
Wonder Boy was to me overly hard / punishing and not in a fun way.
I've played and beaten most every FS title so I like a good challenge.
This just didn't work for me.

Mind if I ask what games have clicked with them?

IMO, has one of the hardest levels in the history of video games. Mouse Man Stone Level. [youtube.com]
If you can beat it in under 100 tries, you're a video game master.
I beat it at 7 years old fwiw
